Read Ezra 7:9-10
What have you set your heart on? A better job? A new car? More square footage? A happy marriage? Well-rounded, 2.5 kids? Even if these statements seem silly to you, I’m relatively certain most of us could not honestly say we’ve set our hearts on studying and teaching the laws and statutes of the Lord. In fact, the vast majority of us can’t even claim to have set our hearts on reading His Word regularly. Nope, we’ve allowed those deceitful above all things, desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9), appendages to edge out God’s proper place in our thought processes, dreams and aspirations. Yet we see here that God’s good hand was on Ezra because of his determination to know Him better and let other people know Him too. When we put God first in all things, when we seek Him and desire Him above all things, His good hand is upon us.
Face it, it’s hard to be touching someone you’re not walking with. So many of us think we can navigate this world with just a pint size dose of Jesus but that wee-bit you’re hoping will make a difference isn’t enough to convince anyone else of His value in your life. Jesus wants all of you so that He can give you all of Himself. Trust me, the exchange is wholly inequivalent and you’ll be the one winning out on the deal. Yet, this exchange requires surrender. Ezra had to relinquish any concern for position and provision. But if you think about it, he was just giving control over to the One who’s over all and owns all. Not much of a risk there! So what are you waiting for?
Father, sometimes I’m amazed by the sheer stupidity of humanity. We’re constantly trying to work things out on our own so enveloped in unwarranted pride that we miss Your best for us. Open our eyes and ears that we might surrender all and follow You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
